Miami Neurological Institute Opens Aventura Headquarters

AVENTURA, FL (July 8, 2009) - Internationally recognized neurosurgeon Santiago Figuereo, M.D. today announced the opening of Miami Neurological Institute (www.miamini.com) headquarters in Aventura at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 335. The office building is located on the campus of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, where Dr. Figuereo takes Emergency Department on-call duty and performs unique, state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgeries of spine and brain disorders not currently available in South Florida.

With emergencies involving the brain and spine - such as stroke or aneurysms - every minute counts, said Heather J. Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Figuereo is an important addition to our team of experts and is specially trained to quickly diagnose and treat patients from our community who are brought to the Emergency Department.

In February, my head felt like it was going to explode, said Nora Olarte of North Miami Beach. My body became limb, and I was rushed to Aventura Hospital s emergency room.

Dr. Figuereo was notified immediately and was even able to view Olarte s MRI scan from his computer at home. Upon review of the scan, Dr. Figuereo diagnosed a bleeding in Olarte s brain and had her prepped for emergency surgery to drain the blood from her brain.

I was having a stroke, and half of my body was paralyzed, said Olarte. If it weren t for the quick response time of Dr. Figuereo, I could have been permanently paralyzed.

Olarte is now completely recovered and living a normal life.

Dr. Figuereo is one of the few Functional Neurosurgery fellowship-trained neurosurgeons in Florida. He also served as standing faculty and assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and neurosurgery division chief at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Medical Center. With the Miami Neurological Institute in January 2009, he is now on staff at several Miami-area hospitals.
